MEN’S PROFESSIONAL TENNIS TOURNAMENT SET FOR INAUGURAL YEAR IN CALGARY

Canadians Steven Diez, Peter Polansky, and Filip Peliwo among players scheduled to compete from August 10-18 at Calgary Tennis Club

Tennis Canada announced Thursday the launch of a new men’s professional tennis tournament in Calgary. The Calgary Futures, an International Tennis Federation-sanctioned event on the ITF Pro Circuit with total prize money of $15,000, will take place from August 10-18 at the Calgary Tennis Club.

“We are so pleased to be adding a new men’s professional tennis event in Calgary this year,” said Gavin Ziv, director of national events, Tennis Canada. “Calgary is such a great sports town, and it has a long history with men’s tennis with some talented players coming out of the province and an undefeated record when hosting our Canadian Davis Cup team. We are looking forward to working with this great club and terrific organizing committee to deliver a successful professional event, and we hope tennis fans enjoy being able to watch many great international and Canadian players up-close.”

The Calgary Futures is one of nine men’s ITF Pro Circuit events on the 2013 Canadian national competitive calendar. Among the Canadian players currently scheduled to compete for the first Calgary Futures title are world No. 218 Steven Diez (Toronto), No. 254 Peter Polansky (Thornhill, Ont.), No. 353 Filip Peliwo (Vancouver), and No. 456 Erik Chvojka (Montreal).

“On behalf of the Calgary Tennis Club, we are honoured to have the opportunity to work with Tennis Canada to bring professional tennis to Calgary,” said Mark MacConnell, Calgary Futures tournament director. “This year’s event will bring world-ranked international players starting at No. 200 in the world, and will be an amazing event to promote the game of tennis, inspire our youth, and engage our communities in a sport that can be played for a lifetime.”

The qualifying tournament will take place August 10-12, with main draw action starting on August 12. The doubles champions will be crowned on August 16, with the singles winner receiving his trophy on August 18. In addition to the tennis action provided by the world-class athletes, the tournament will feature a player/sponsor and media reception on August 12 and a few Kids Tennis events through the week.

Admission to the Calgary Futures is free. For more information on the tournament, please contact MacConnell at ctctournaments@gmail.com.
